Florida Stone Crab Trap Requirements: What Every Crabber Needs to Know
Florida's stone crab fishery is one of the most regulated in the country — and for good reason. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) enforces strict trap requirements to protect the population and ensure sustainable harvesting for generations to come. Whether you're a recreational crabber or a licensed commercial operation, knowing the rules before you drop a trap could save you from a costly citation.
Here's everything you need to know before stone crab season opens October 15.
Escape Rings
All stone crab traps must have at least one escape ring measuring a minimum of 2 3/16 inches inside diameter. These rings allow undersized crabs and non-target species to exit the trap freely. FWC requires escape rings to be unobstructed and properly fitted — a loose or blocked ring doesn't count.
Most recreational crabbers use two rings per trap for better compliance and catch efficiency. If you're retrofitting older traps, the rings need to be permanently attached, not zip-tied as a temporary fix.
Claw Size Gauge
Only stone crab claws measuring 2 7/8 inches or larger (measured from the elbow to the tip of the lower immovable finger) may be harvested. FWC officers carry gauges on the water — you should too.
Having a claw gauge dockside or on your boat isn't just smart, it's essential. Harvesting undersized claws carries serious fines and can result in license suspension for commercial crabbers.
Trap Identification Tags
Every stone crab trap must be tagged with the owner's name, address, and recreational or commercial license number. Tags must be legible and securely attached. FWC can seize untagged traps, and there's no grace period for missing identification.
Marine-grade tags that can withstand salt water, sun, and repeated submersion are the right choice here — standard paper or plastic labels won't last a season.
Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs)
Commercial stone crab trap fishermen operating in certain areas are required to use Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) to prevent sea turtle bycatch. Recreational crabbers should check current FWC zone maps as requirements vary by location and are updated periodically.
Season Dates
Stone crab season in Florida runs October 15 through May 1. Traps may not be in the water outside of these dates. Mark your calendar — FWC enforces season dates strictly, particularly at the start and end of the season.
Get Your Gear Ready Before the Season Rush
The weeks before October 15 are the worst time to realize your traps aren't compliant. Escape rings sell out, shipping slows down, and you lose fishing days waiting on gear.
